7 Things you NEED to know before visiting Nassau Bahamas
Visiting Nassau? Nassau, the capital of the Bahamas, is a tropical paradise full of turquoise waters, sandy beaches, and vibrant culture. But before you go, there are a few things every traveler should know to make the most of their trip. Whether you’re going there on your cruise, or flying in, here’s a quick guide to help you navigate Nassau like a pro.
1. Beware of Pushy Solicitors
Walking around downtown Nassau, you’ll encounter vendors and solicitors trying to sell tours, souvenirs, or excursions. They can be very persistent. The best approach? Ignore them and keep walking. Politely declining or just smiling and moving on usually works.
But do be warned you will be bombarded with people trying to get you to come into their shop.

2. Cash is King
While many places accept credit cards, some smaller shops, local vendors, and excursions only take cash. Especially if you’re taking an excursion, be sure to have cash for tips as well.
When visiting Nassau, local vendors much prefer cash over credit. Make sure to carry some U.S. dollars for convenience—ATMs are available, but they can charge high fees.
3. Don’t Miss the Local Cuisine

Nassau is a foodie’s paradise! Try conch salad, Bahamian rock lobster, and Johnny cakes. Check out local spots for authentic flavors—avoid tourist traps if you want the real taste of the Bahamas.
Drinks: My favorite drink is a Bahama Mama or a Rum Runner. If you’re looking for suggestions on fun cocktails to order, I suggest one of those. After all, you are in the Caribbean, might as well try some tropical fruity drinks while you’re here! You can a get a beer any time. The cocktails here are totally worth it.

4. Try Different Beaches
- When visiting Nassau, don’t just stick to resort beaches. Try other beaches as well:
- Cable Beach for calm, clear water
- Junkanoo Beach for a more lively, local vibe
- Don’t be afraid to venture away from the resort
5. Plan Your Excursions in Advance
Nassau offers amazing excursions like swimming with pigs, snorkeling, and cultural tours. Booking ahead can help your secure spots and sometimes save money. Popular tours fill up fast, especially during cruise season.

6. Stay Safe While Swimming
The beaches in Nassau are stunning, but always pay attention to warning flags and signs. Some areas have strong currents or jellyfish. Stick to lifeguarded beaches if you’re not a confident swimmer.
7. Respect Local Customs and Culture
The Bahamian people are friendly and welcoming. A simple “hello” or “good morning” goes a long way. Dress modestly when visiting churches or local communities, and always be respectful of the environment, don’t litter or try to mess with marine life. There is nothing that makes me angrier than seeing people mess with wildlife or simply throw trash into the oceans. You’re a visitor in a different country, be respectful.
Final Thoughts:
Cruise vs. Stay
- If you’re coming on a cruise, plan your time carefully. Nassau has more to offer than the port area. If you’re booking an excursion, don’t book it through the locals, book it through the cruise line so that you know you’ll be back in time before the ship leaves.

- If staying longer, consider day trips to nearby islands like Paradise Island.
