8 Awesome Things to do in Zion Besides Hiking!

Let’s be honest, Zion is famous for its unique, difficult and beautiful hikes. But what if hiking isn’t your thing? Or maybe your legs are just begging for a break? Good news: there’s so much more to do in Zion National Park that doesn’t involve trudging up a steep trail. Whether you’re looking for something more laid-back or just want to mix things up, here are 8 awesome things to do in Zion besides hiking.

The Narrows

1. Rent a Bike and Cruise Through Zion Canyon

One of the absolute best ways to see Zion is by bike. You can rent a cruiser or e-bike right in Springdale and ride the Scenic Drive (which is closed to cars most of the year). It’s peaceful, stunning, and way easier on the knees. Plus, you can stop wherever you want for photos or snacks. You can really make a day of this and have an awesome time without exerting yourself too much

2. Go Kayaking or Paddleboarding on the Virgin River

Yep, you can float through Zion! If the water levels are good, rent a kayak or paddleboard and explore sections of the Virgin River. It’s a totally different way to experience the canyon. It’s quiet, refreshing, and way less crowded than the hiking trails.

Plus on a hot summer day, being on the water is a great way to cool off. There are a few shops to rent kayaks from in Springdale, you can also float down the river in rafts by booking the experience here.

3. Take a Scenic Drive Through Kolob Canyons

Most people miss this part of Zion, but Kolob Canyons (on the northwest side of the park) is stunning. There’s a 5-mile scenic drive that gives you jaw-dropping views without stepping out of your car. Although you definitely should pull over to take photos and take in the beauty of your surroundings. It’s especially gorgeous at sunset.

4. Explore Springdale’s Shops and Art Galleries

The town of Springdale (right at the park entrance) is super charming. Spend an afternoon wandering through local shops, picking up souvenirs, or checking out some surprisingly impressive art galleries. Grab a coffee or ice cream and just take it slow.

5. Hop on a Zion Canyon Shuttle for the Views

Even if you’re not hiking, just riding the shuttle through the canyon is worth it. The narrated tour gives you the background on all the iconic rock formations, and the views from the windows are next-level. Sit back, relax, and take it all in.

6. Watch the Stars Light Up the Night Sky

Zion is a designated International Dark Sky Park, which means the stargazing here is out of this world. After sunset, head out of town a bit (or just find a quiet spot in the park), lay back, and enjoy the Milky Way overhead. Truly a unique experience and something that you really can’t do in that many places in the world.

7. Visit the Zion Human History Museum

Not only is the museum a great spot to cool off, but it also gives some amazing context to the park. You’ll learn about Zion’s Native American history, geology, and early settlers. And the view from the back patio is unbelievable as well.

We just sat out there for 10-15 minutes before we had to leave to just take it all in one last time and slow down before getting back to our fast-paced lifestyle back home.

Zion is basically a photographer’s dream. You don’t need to hike to get incredible shots. Just drive, bike or shuttle to places like Court of the Patriarchs, Big Bend, or Canyon Junction Bridge around sunset. Really no matter where you are in the park, you’re going to capture an awesome picture!
