Arches or Canyonlands: Which National Park Is Better for First-Time Visitors?
Planning a trip to Southern Utah to see the National Parks? You might be asking yourself: Should I visit Arches or Canyonlands? Which one is better?
After visiting both parks during my Utah road trip, I can honestly say there’s no wrong choice.
But they’re also completely different experiences.
Before my trip, I was convinced Arches would be my favorite. It’s the park everyone talks about, and Delicate Arch is on post cards all around the country.
Then I spent a day exploring Canyonlands and it completely changed my mind.
While I still think Arches is an incredible national park, Canyonlands ended up being one of my favorite parks I’ve been to. Not because of incredible mountain ranges or wildlife, but because of something super unique.
So which park should you visit if you only have time for one?
Here’s my honest opinion after spending time in both.

Quick Answer
If you’re short on time, here’s my recommendation.
Choose Arches National Park if:
- It’s your first national park.
- You only have a few hours.
- You want to see world-famous rock formations.
- You’re traveling with younger kids or people who don’t hike much.
- You want to take a bus tour of the park

- You want to watch the sunset
Choose Canyonlands National Park if:
- You love hiking.
- You prefer fewer crowds.
- You’re looking for a more adventurous experience.
- You want incredible canyon and desert views.
If you have two days in Moab…visit both.
They offer completely different experiences, and I think seeing both parks is what makes a trip to Moab so memorable.
They’re More Different Than You Think
Before we compare them, it’s important to understand one thing.
These parks may only be about 30 minutes apart, but they couldn’t feel more different.
Arches National Park is famous for its sandstone arches, balanced rocks, and unique formations.
Canyonlands National Park is all about massive canyons, walking on the edge of cliffs, endless desert views, and incredible hiking.
This isn’t really a question of which park is objectively better.
It’s about which one fits the type of trip you want.
Why Arches National Park Is Worth Visiting
There’s a reason Arches is one of the most visited national parks in the country.
The scenery is unlike anywhere else I’ve been.
Driving through the park it feels like another planet to be honest. Seeing arches all around you and incredible rock formations.
Even if you don’t hike much, you can still see a lot of the park from the scenic drive and short walking trails.
That’s one of the biggest reasons I’d recommend Arches to first-time visitors.
You don’t have to work very hard to see something amazing.
What I Loved
- Incredible arches that were formed from millions of years of erosion
- Awesome scenic drive through the park, very wide open
- Short walks to many viewpoints like Balanced Rock, Park Ave, double arch
- Perfect for first-time visitors
- Great photography opportunities

Downsides
Parking lots fill quickly, especially at the most popular trailheads.
The park also feels much busier than Canyonlands.
While I enjoyed the hiking, I personally didn’t find it quite as exciting as Canyonlands.
However, we did only take a bus tour through the park, so we didn’t actually do the Delicate Arch hike, which I’m sure would’ve been pretty incredible.
Why Canyonlands National Park Is Worth Visiting
Canyonlands completely exceeded my expectations.
Not many arches here. More just miles and miles of canyon views and unique rock formations in the distance.
One of my favorite memories from the trip was sitting at Grand View Point looking across miles of desert.
Pictures don’t really prepare you for how massive everything feels.
The hiking also stood out to me.
Walking along cliff edges, scrambling over rocks at Aztec Butte, and exploring quieter trails made the entire park feel more adventurous.
You’re not going to see world famous landmarks like “Delicate Arch” in Canyonlands, but you will see incredible scenery and super unique landscape and trails.
Is Canyonlands National Park Worth Visiting?
What I Loved
- Incredible canyon scenery
- Much fewer crowds
- More adventurous hiking
- Peaceful atmosphere
- Amazing overlooks

Downsides
Canyonlands requires a little more effort.
The viewpoints are more spread out, and if you really want to experience the park, I think hiking is part of what makes it special.
If you aren’t interested in hiking, Arches may be the better choice.
However, if you want to see more of Canyonlands back country with no crowds, especially the “Needles District” take a guided tour of the area here
So Which Park would I Recommend?
I love the unique hikes, any park where I am going off trail and scrambling over rocks, is something I love. Plus, the fact you can sit at the top of a cliff with barely anyone else around you, there is something so peaceful about that.
After spending time in both parks, I personally preferred Canyonlands.
The peaceful hiking trails, incredible overlooks, and lack of crowds made a bigger impression on me than I expected.
That doesn’t mean Arches isn’t worth visiting.
It absolutely is.
In fact, if you’re visiting Moab for the first time and only have a few hours, I’d probably recommend Arches.

How to Visit all of Utah’s National Parks in 6 Days! (My Full Itinerary)
When deciding between Arches or Canyonlands, there’s a lot to consider.
I loved the quieter trails, the adventurous hiking, and the endless canyon views.
But I completely understand why so many people prefer Arches more.
If it’s your first trip to Moab, I truly believe both parks deserve a spot on your itinerary.
Arches will give you the iconic landmarks you’ve always seen in photos.
However, Canyonlands needs more love in my opinion. It feels a little overshadowed by Arches, which makes sense considering Arches has the famous postcards and it’s only about a 5-minute drive outside of Moab.
But either way, you can’t go wrong starting off your Southern Utah road trip with Canyonlands and Arches National Park
