Is Peneda-Gerês National Park Worth Visiting From Porto? My Honest Review

If you’re visiting Porto, Portugal, and looking for a day trip outside the city, you should definitely consider visiting Peneda-Gerês National Park.

But is Peneda-gerês National Park actually worth visiting from Porto?

Short answer is YES! Especially if you love nature, beautiful viewpoints, hiking, and getting away from the busy city.

During our five-day trip to Porto, we booked a small-group tour of Peneda-gerês National Park for only about $110 per person, which included transportation and lunch.

We spent the day exploring beautiful viewpoints, swimming in a natural pool, and enjoying some incredible mountain scenery.

Here’s what our experience was like, what we loved, what we didn’t love, and whether I think you should book a tour.

Peneda-Gerês National Park

How Much Did Our Peneda-Gerês National Park Tour Cost?

We paid approximately $110 per person for our guided tour through Viator.

For that price, we received:

  • Round-trip transportation from Porto
  • A small-group guided tour
  • Stops at several beautiful viewpoints
  • A visit to a natural swimming pool
  • Short hikes throughout the park
  • Lunch included

Honestly, I thought this was a pretty good deal for a full day tour

The transportation alone made it worth considering, especially since the national park is roughly two hours from Porto.

Our guide picked us up near our hotel, and we traveled in a van with only six people in our group.

I actually really liked having such a small group. It made the experience more personal, and we had a chance to meet other travelers throughout the day.

Travel Tip: If you’re planning to visit Peneda-Gerês National Park from Porto, I recommend booking a guided tour. The mountain roads can be narrow and winding, and having someone else handle the driving makes the day much easier.

What Was Our Peneda-Gerês National Park Tour Like?

Our tour lasted approximately 10 hours, including transportation from Porto.

The drive was about two hours each way, but the scenery was beautiful as we made our way into the mountains.

Once we arrived, we spent the day visiting different viewpoints, exploring the natural scenery, and swimming in one of the park’s natural pools.

What I really liked was that we didn’t have to do any extremely difficult hikes to experience the park.

Most of our stops involved short walks or simply getting out of the van to enjoy the views.

If you’re someone who enjoys national parks but doesn’t necessarily want to spend six hours hiking, this is a great way to experience Peneda-Gerês.

Swimming in a Natural Pool

Swimming Hole in Peneda-Gerês National Park

This was definitely one of the highlights of our day.

Our guide took us to a beautiful natural swimming hole surrounded by rocks and greenery.

Getting there required about a 20-minute hike downhill, followed by a roughly 20–25-minute hike back uphill afterward.

The hike wasn’t particularly difficult, but there was definitely an incline on the way back.

Once we arrived, there were already quite a few people enjoying the water.

And in case you are wondering. Yes, the water was pretty cold. But after spending several days walking around Porto in the summer heat, jumping into that refreshing water felt incredible.

We spent some time swimming, relaxing, and enjoying the scenery before hiking back to the van.

If you’re visiting Portugal during the summer, I highly recommend bringing a swimsuit and towel.

This was one of my favorite experiences from the entire tour.

The Beautiful Viewpoints Throughout the Park

One of the biggest reasons I recommend visiting Peneda-Gerês National Park is the scenery.

The mountains, rivers, forests, and viewpoints were absolutely beautiful.

We stopped at several viewpoints throughout the day, including Pedra Bela, which was probably my favorite.

From here, you could see the surrounding mountains and the Cávado River stretching through the landscape below.

Most of the viewpoints were easily accessible from where our guide parked.

I honestly just enjoyed being in the national park, getting away from the city, and experiencing a completely different side of Portugal.

For this scenic overlook, we had to rock scramble about 5 minutes up to the view point which was honestly pretty fun.

What I Didn’t Like About the Tour

Overall, I really enjoyed the experience, but there was one thing I would have changed.

I wish we spent less time at lunch and more time exploring.

Lunch was included in the tour, which was great, but it felt a little longer than necessary.

Personally, I would rather grab something quick and get back on the road to see more of the national park.

There was apparently another waterfall we could have walked to, but we didn’t have enough time. There was another waterfall as well in the distance that was just a little stream in August because the water had dried up. However if you visit in March or April during rainy season, it’s much more of a heavy flow.

If you’re looking for a big hiking trip, then this probably isn’t the tour for you.

Who Should Visit Peneda-Gerês National Park?

I think Peneda-Gerês is a great day trip for a lot of different travelers.

I would especially recommend it for:

  • Couples: A beautiful day outside Porto with swimming, scenery, and relaxing stops.
  • National park lovers: If you enjoy exploring national parks, this is an excellent opportunity to experience one in Portugal.
  • Nature lovers: The mountains, rivers, and viewpoints are incredible.
  • First-time Porto visitors: A great way to see more of Portugal beyond the city.
  • Casual hikers: You can enjoy plenty of beautiful scenery without completing long, difficult hikes.

You don’t need to be an experienced hiker to enjoy the type of tour we booked.

However, if you have mobility limitations, keep in mind that the natural swimming pool required walking downhill and then hiking back uphill on uneven terrain.

And if you’re looking for a fast-paced adventure with lots of hiking, make sure you choose a tour that specifically includes those activities.

Douro Valley vs. Peneda-Gerês: Which Day Trip Is Better?

This is a tough question because I genuinely loved both experiences.

During our Porto trip, we took a full-day tour of the Douro Valley and another full-day tour of Peneda-Gerês National Park.

Both were incredible, but they offered completely different experiences.

Prices reflect what we paid for our specific tours.

If you can only choose one, I would recommend the Douro Valley.

Douro Valley Wine Region

It’s one of Portugal’s most famous wine regions, and the scenery was absolutely incredible.

I also thought our Douro Valley tour offered a really complete experience with the vineyard, wine tasting, boat ride, and lunch.

However, if you’re spending four or five days in Porto and have another day available, Peneda-Gerês is absolutely worth adding to your itinerary.

It’s also a much more affordable option based on what we paid.

One Place I Wish We Had More Time to Explore: Rio Caldo

One of the biggest surprises of our entire day actually happened on the drive back toward Porto.

We passed through Rio Caldo, a beautiful area along the water surrounded by mountains.

The water was an incredible emerald color, reflecting the sunlight with mountains rising all around it.

People were out boating, kayaking, jet skiing, swimming, and relaxing along the waterfront.

There were also lots of hotels, restaurants, and beach bars around the area. People out an about and having fun.

I immediately turned to Abbie and said, we need to spend a day here next time we’re in Portugal.

It looked like such an awesome place to spend a summer day.

I’d find a hotel near the water, spend the afternoon jet skiing or swimming, and enjoy the restaurants and bars afterward.

It looked like the perfect place to relax while surrounded by some incredible scenery.

If you’re planning a longer trip through northern Portugal, this is somewhere I would seriously consider adding.

Just that 10 minute drive through the town made me want to book a trip back to go here.

Would I Take the Same Tour Again?

I would absolutely visit Peneda-Gerês National Park again.

I don’t think I would book the same exact tour again though.

But only because I’d want to see something different.

There is so much beautiful scenery throughout the region, and I would love to explore more of the waterfalls, hiking trails, and areas we didn’t have time to visit.

I’d also want to spend more time around Rio Caldo.

For a first-time visit, though, I thought our guided tour was an excellent introduction to the national park.

And for approximately $40 per person, I really couldn’t complain.

Is Peneda-Gerês National Park Worth Visiting From Porto?

YES! Especially if you love nature and want to experience something outside the city.

We spent roughly 10 hours exploring the park, swimming in a natural pool, visiting beautiful viewpoints, and enjoying the mountain scenery.

And for only about $110 per person, including transportation and lunch, I thought it was a good value.

If you’re visiting Porto for four or five days, I definitely recommend considering Peneda-Gerês National Park for one of your day trips.

Would I choose it over the Douro Valley if I only had time for one? Probably not.

But if you have an extra day, enjoy national parks, or simply want to escape the city for a while, Peneda-Gerês National Park is absolutely worth visiting.

It’s one of the most beautiful natural areas we experienced during our trip to Portugal, and somewhere I would love to return to someday.
