Best Things to do in Bar Harbor in the Fall

Exploring Bar Harbor in the Fall: A Comprehensive Guide

Bar Harbor, Maine, transforms into a vibrant tapestry of autumn colors each fall, offering visitors a blend of natural beauty, delectable cuisine, and engaging activities. If you’re looking to visit Acadia National Park, the fall is the best time to go, especially October, when there’s a crisp coolness in the air, the leaves change, the town gets decorated for Halloween and the atmosphere is something out of a movie.

Bar Harbor is the main town that nearly all people who visit Acadia National Park stay at or spend the most time in. It’s a quaint little town right along the water with much to do. Many local shops, restaurants, cafes, bars, tours and more!

Here’s a curated guide to help you make the most of your fall visit.

1. Coffee shops and local Cafes

Of course you know me you have to start out your day by trying out the local coffee shops! Here are a few of my favorites.

  • Coffee Hound Coffee Co.: Start your day with expertly brewed coffee at this local favorite.
  • Sunrise Cafe: Located right on the dock of the tour boats, sunrise Cafe is a small coffee shop that is the perfect way to start your day on what is most likely a brisk morning. Grab a coffee and a blueberry pastry while enjoying the water and boats on the dock.
  • Choco-Latte Cafe: Indulge in a variety of coffees and chocolates in a cozy setting. This place usually gets pretty busy but it is definitely worth the wait. Some local favorites and very unique coffee here.

2. Scenic Boat Tours

Something you absolutely need to do is a boat tour. Use the link here for Bar Harbor Whale Watching Company. There are several different tours you can take here with this company. We did the lobster fishing and seal watching tour. They show us how they fish for lobster and even let us hold some! All while taking a trip to a nearby lighthouse and watching the seals and birds lay in the rays.

A few other options include;

  • Whale Watching: Embark on a whale-watching excursion to observe humpback and minke whales in their natural habitat. Truly an experience unlike any other. While you’re not guaranteed to spot any whales you get a great chance too. Loads of fun for the whole family.
  • Sunset Cruises: Enjoy the breathtaking fall foliage from the water during a serene sunset cruise.
  • Lighthouse / Peninsula Cruise : Another thing Maine is very well known for is their lighthouses. Another tour let’s you take trips to see some of the largest in the state all while touring the peninsula, gazing at the fall foliage and admiring the rock and cliffs that overhang the Atlantic.

Definitely recommend doing at least one tour while you’re here. I would even do two if we had the time. You can learn a lot of fun and interesting facts aboard the tours and they’re reasonably priced as well.

Of course if you’re traveling to Maine then you should know that Maine is most famous for their lobster. Fresh lobster is caught everyday along the coast line and lobster fishing is one of the biggest industries in the state.

In 2023, Maine caught over 90 million pounds of Lobster, which is by far the largest in the country.

I’m not a huge lobster eater but of course I had to try it while I was here. Here are some great spots to try any kind of lobster! Check out the official Acadia National Park guide for more in depth food options as well!

  • The Travelin Lobster: Experience authentic Maine lobster at this roadside shack known for its fresh offerings

The place is decorated in Maritime and a very cool and fun environment to grab lunch or dinner. Fish hanging on the walls, posters, nets, license plates, anchors etc. A very cool dining experiences and one of my favorite places in all of Bar Harbor.
  • Paddy’s Irish Pub: For a more eloquent dining experience, Paddy’s was a great spot and very delicious. You get the whole experience here when it comes to lobster. A friend of mine got what is pictured below. I stuck to the hot lobster roll which did not disappoint.

Bonus: TRY THE BLUEBERRIES:

Something I just learned when I went to Bar harbor for the first time was that Maine is the country’s largest importer of blueberries.

Maine produces 99% of the wild blueberries in the United States. In 2021 then produced over 105 million pounds of blueberries.

So if you see blueberry pastries or deserts or specialty beer or wine on the menu, now you know why. I highly recommend trying the beer and wine. Absolutely delicious. I even brought myself home some cans!

Conclusion

No matter when you go to Bar Harbor, it’s a lovely and vibrant town along the coast of Maine with lots to do. Perfect for a family getaway. Through all the shops, walking along Main street, taking a boat tour, finding new places to eat or have a drink, there is always something for everyone in this coastal town.
