Top 10 Travel Habits of Experienced Travelers That You Need to Start
Experienced travelers don’t always travel more; they just travel smarter. Over time, they learn that the difference between a stressful trip and a smooth one often comes down to small decisions made before and during the journey. Here are 10 travel habits that consistently make trips easier, more enjoyable, and less exhausting.
1. Choosing the Direct Flight Whenever Possible
If there’s a direct flight available at a reasonable price, experienced travelers usually take it. Layovers might save a little money, but they often add delays, stress, missed connections, and exhaustion. A direct flight means you arrive with more energy and less uncertainty.

2. Arriving a Day Early to Beat Jet Lag & Chaos
A very underrated travel habit is to arrive a day early, especially for long-haul trips. This buffer helps your body adjust, protects you from travel delays, and gives you time to rest. Believe me, if you’ve never traveled to a different time zone before, especially to Europe, you’re going to be exhausted and glad you did this.
3. Booking a Place in a Neighborhood You Actually Want to Spend Time in
Where you stay shapes your entire trip. Rather than choosing only based on price or hotel stars, seasoned travelers prioritize location. Be sure to do some research on the place you’re staying before you book it. Sometimes you want to spend a little more, for more peace of mind.
For my trip to Portugal this summer, we’re staying in a cheaper Airbnb the first couple days and then the last two days staying in a nice hotel. We wanted to option to splurge and be somewhere we can truly relax and get an experience we don’t usually get.
4. Splurging on One Incredible Meal You Wouldn’t Normally Have
Experienced travelers often choose one standout dining experience per trip. It could be a tasting menu, a famous local restaurant, or a once-in-a-lifetime food experience. The memory often lasts longer than the cost. In Iceland, I can still remember the incredible dishes I had.
If you’re somewhere new, I would highly recommend taking a food tour. You get to experience some of the best places with a highly knowledgeable guide and try tons of different foods.

5. Keeping One Free Day in the Itinerary
Over-planned trips can feel like a checklist. Leaving at least one unstructured day creates space for spontaneity. I would recommend walking around the city or park. Slowing down, visiting new cafes or brunch spots, or even just people watching in the park.
One of my favorite things was in Iceland we had a free day and walked around a bookstore into a book signing event with a famous author. They served cocktails and ordure’s, and we ended up spending a lot of time there. One of the coolest experiences I can remember.
6. Packing Light
Most experienced travelers eventually realize they always pack too much. Traveling lighter makes everything so much easier. You don’t have to check a bag, it’s less stuff to carry, less stuff to unpack and repack, and majority of the time, you don’t wear everything you bring anyway.
I know it’s completely different as a girl. But if you’re in doubt, leave it out. It truly will make packing and traveling much easier.

7. Understanding That Rest is Part of The Trip, Not Wasted Time
Rest days aren’t “lost days.” They’re what make the rest of the trip enjoyable. Experienced travelers plan downtime intentionally, so they don’t burn out halfway through the journey. Depending on the length of the trip, some rest days are needed.
When we’re exploring National Parks and hiking a lot, we like to have a rest day in between so we can take some time to sleep in and recover.
8. Paying for Convenience When it Reduces Stress
Whether it’s airport transfers, taking an uber instead of walking or trains, or booking a hotel closer to attractions. Experienced travelers don’t hesitate to spend a bit more if it removes planning stress. Time and energy often matter more than saving a few dollars, especially on vacation.
9. Doing Something You’ve Never Done Before
I feel like every trip needs to include at least one unique experience that you’ve never done before. Stepping out of your comfort zone and trying something new. Traveling is a time where we’re out of our day-to-day routine and we let loose and do things we don’t get the opportunity to normally do.
Go skydiving, go cliff jumping, go jet skiing, take a wine tour, swim under a waterfall, hike a mountain, try a new food, take a cooking class, talk to new people, ride in a helicopter, go zip lining. I don’t care what it is. Just do something you have never done before!

10. Using Travel Credit Cards & Points to Pay for Trips
Last but not least, experienced travelers often use travel credit cards to earn points and miles on everyday spending, then redeem them for flights, hotels, and upgrades. Over time, this can significantly reduce travel costs or even cover entire trips. The best cards i would recommend are Chase Sapphire, Capital One Venture and American Express.
Majority of the time they have huge welcome bonuses as well so you can earn a ton of points in a short amount of time.
